About
Following a devastating fire that left the community of Kugaaruk with the loss of its only educational facility, the new Arvilligruaq Illiniarvik School was swiftly constructed within a remarkable two-and-a-half years, reinstating education for kindergarten through grade 12. Parkin, the architects behind the project, recognized the school’s significance as a vital community resource and approached design with this in mind.
The school’s layout was designed to cater to students of all ages, with separate floors for kindergarten and higher grades. Each floor also has its own student commons area, providing semi-public spaces for the school’s use. Additionally, the school’s gymnasium is an invaluable space for physical activity and community events, particularly during the colder months. The multi-purpose classrooms, resource centre, and canteen also provide opportunities for public and semi-public events.
Parkin’s user-centred approach was crucial in the design of the new school. By recognizing its importance as a vital resource, the team was able to create a versatile space that serves the needs of both students and the broader community.
