Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre Breaks Ground on Cardiovascular Surgery Program Expansion

The official groundbreaking for the expansion of the Cardiovascular Surgery (CVS) Program at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) marked a new era in healthcare for Northwestern Ontario. The ceremony held on June 10 was attended by Parkin’s Mario Pistone, Mark Michasiw, Ben Trono, and Joy San Jose, alongside leaders from the hospital, healthcare partners, community donors, and government representatives.

This transformational project marks a major milestone in advancing specialized care for the region. The CVS program will significantly enhance TBRHSC’s capacity to deliver high-quality vascular and cardiovascular services, integrated with key hospital departments including Ambulatory Care, Emergency, Surgical Suite, and Inpatient Services.

New services introduced through the expansion include complex vascular surgeries supported by a hybrid operating room, and a complete continuum of care—from ambulatory consultation and scheduled or emergency intervention to intensive post-operative care and discharge planning.

A key challenge and opportunity in this project lies in designing a seamless integration with the existing hospital infrastructure while accommodating the unique operational and spatial needs of the new program. Though new to Thunder Bay, the CVS program builds on proven provincial networks and established clinical partnerships to ensure service readiness and excellence from day one.

The expansion encompasses approximately 62,000 square feet of new construction and 12,000 square feet of renovations, supported by an $80 million construction budget.
