The eight-storey critical care tower and the largest emergency department in Canada are now open at Surrey Memorial Hospital. The 400,000 square foot building was expanded to meet healthcare needs of the rapidly growing Fraser Valley, with 151 new beds added for an increased capacity of 30 percent.
The project was a Joint Venture between Parkin Architects and CEI Architecture. “Thanks to this new facility, health-care professionals will be able to deliver the best possible care for families in a larger, modern environment with more beds, space, equipment and staff,” Health Minister Terry Lake said to The Now newspaper.
Design for the new tower and emergency department supports the highest standards of care through evidence-based and Lean design principles. The project targets LEED certification.
Patient and family care have remained at the core of the design. Eighty percent of the tower rooms are single-patient, bringing more privacy and better infection prevention and control to patients and visitors. Each room also includes access to natural light and a dedicated family space with a sofa-bed or recliner.
