Parkin helped redesign the Slaight Family Integrated mental Health Unit at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto. The unit cares for children and youth who are experiencing a broad range of complex mental health conditions and eating disorders.
Our first video (series 1) explored the unit and focused on important design elements. Our recent video “Evidence Based Design and Interior Concepts”, (series 2) touches on research conducted by Parkin, which has shown a connection to nature can have an impact on a patient’s recovery, affecting physical and mental well-being.
Although being in an urban setting at SickKids posed a challenge, the design team drew inspiration from nature and included large graphic images on the walls reminiscent of those found in a natural environment. These images are found at key locations throughout the unit such as the central waiting area and the signage panels at the patient rooms.
Parkin is proud to participate in the redesign of such an important patient care space.
