Over the past 5 years, Richard Huot, Managing Principal of our Ottawa office has been teaching at Carleton University in the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism. Richard has been sharing his knowledge with 4th Year Bachelors students in both Architecture and Engineering as well as 1st year master of architecture students through the, “Architectural Technology 4” course. Richard’s teaching covers all aspects of building science from foundations, through cladding principles, material research to environmental issues. Richard’s extensive experience working on projects in the artic, has given him a rare perspective on the importance of designing buildings that respond to their environment. Through Richard’s hands on experience working in extreme climates, he has gained a respect and admiration of traditional building methods, and an understanding of the impacts of climate and topography on building which he pairs with his expert knowledge of contemporary building science. His enthusiasm for learning inspires him to share his knowledge with the next generation of architects.
“I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to continue to share my love of learning, to share what I know and what I was taught to the future of our profession. Over the years I’ve had the privilege to expand students’ knowledge of the practice of Architecture & Building Envelopes and even begun to run into some of them working as practitioners. As every year goes by it never ceases to amaze me the things I learn from my students, every one of them with their unique talents, skills, personalities, and drive. As one of my Mentors Larry Hately would say “Remember it’s not Rocket Science, its Building Science!” Richard Huot, Principal, Parkin Architects.
We hope to inspire and empower future designers to create meaningful and enriching work in the built environment without sacrificing our natural environment.
