Red Fish Healing Centre for Mental Health & Addiction

Located on səmiq̓ʷəʔelə in Coquitlam, (formerly the Riverview lands), Red Fish Healing Centre for Mental Health & Addiction is a new, leading-edge centre for mental health and addiction treatment and research in British Columbia. The core guiding design and construction principles reflect the values of the community and the Kwikwetlem First Nation (“KFN”).

Parkin is grateful to have had the opportunity to work on this new leading-edge, evidence-based, healthcare model, that is based on our values and care principles.  It not only focusses on mental wellness and substance-free living, but also on clients’ physical wellness and how they can live a meaningful life, and eventual transition to care in their home communities.

The new 105-bed facility will treat people across the province who live with the most severe, complex substance use and mental health issues.  The four-storey, 105-bed facility sets a new standard in healthcare and community design by incorporating natural light and views of the Riverview Lands and surrounding area, among many other therapeutic treatment elements. The project team worked closely with the KFN to identify opportunities to integrate wellness aspects of community design wherever feasible, such as exterior facade design and colour palette, landscaping, public art, and community and wellness gardens.

All elements of the Red Fish Healing Centre, including green spaces, natural light, views to nature, private client rooms, and more, are designed with the needs of clients and patients in mind.

The Red Fish Centre includes the following features:

  • private client rooms and facilities
  • calming and comforting interior design elements
  • natural and therapeutic lighting
  • green spaces and gardens
  • Indigenous art and sacred spaces
  • visiting and learning areas
  • communal kitchen spaces
  • music room
  • art room
  • physical activity/gym space
  • places to meet with families and friends.
