Parkin received an Honourable Mention and National Recognition award for excellence in educational facility design in the 2017 spring edition of American magazine, LEARNING BY DESIGN, the premier source of education design, innovation and excellence. Tuugaalik High School (Naujaat, Nunavut, Canada) has been recognized for its overall plan, architectural design and attributes worthy of imitation.
The magazine nominated 59 outstanding projects, of which the Nunavut high school is the only project located outside the USA. In addition, 11 of those projects received special awards from the magazine, one of which went to Tuugaalik High School.
The Jury’s comments state, “Smart design for climate and community needs. Use of laminated wood beams in the Kiva is a thoughtful detail for this significant space. Thank you for providing the metrics for measuring outcomes! This took a great deal of understanding and engagement to fully adapt and incorporate local cultural ideals. Great use of colors, spaces, and CTE education.”
