Health Sciences Centre, Women’s Hospital, Winnipeg-provides inspiration

Healthcare Design Magazine’s Featured Firms edition, published in February 2020, focuses on projects completed by the major players in healthcare design. Parkin entered its latest completed inspirational project—Health Sciences Centre (HSC), Women’s Hospital, Winnipeg.

HSC, Women’s Hospital was designed to meet the needs of women and their families. It is warm and welcoming and designed to be respectful of patients’ needs for privacy, as well as providing multiple opportunities for interpersonal connections and support. The ambulatory care clinics are located at ground level; they incorporate systems furniture at reception areas in order to facilitate future reconfiguration.

Because women’s health care services were previously dispersed across campus, it was recognized that new synergies among programs would emerge only when they were all collocated, at which time changes in physical configuration would most likely be necessary. All patients are accommodated in single rooms with support spaces for families in every bedroom. The NICU has five pods of ten bassinets, each with central work facilities for staff, and family spaces located along the perimeter of the building. On the main floor, waiting areas for the ambulatory clinics, family lounges for the NICU, and a café provide opportunities for patients and staff to connect to the neighbourhood and the rest of the HSC campus. The interior design of the hospital supports the variety of cultures and backgrounds of patients and their families, who represent indigenous communities and a diverse community of recent immigrants.
