Grandview Kids is a children’s treatment centre that represents a groundbreaking achievement in healthcare facility design. Designed by Parkin Architects, the new children’s treatment centre brings together architecture, interior design, and therapeutic innovation to create an environment that is inclusive, joyful, and deeply supportive of child and family well-being.
Serving children with developmental, physical, and speech-language disabilities, Grandview Kids reimagines what pediatric healthcare design can be: functional, uplifting, and centered on the whole child.

A Whimsical Design Philosophy that puts Children First
At Grandview Kids, the design team designed a “whimsical” environment focused on the needs of children of all ages. Embracing this philosophy as a core principle, architects and designers created spaces that feel welcoming and fun while maintaining refined functionality.
The CEO championed this playful spirit, even proposing a bright blue slide from the second-floor terrace to the ground level. Today, clinicians use the slide as a reward for children after therapy sessions, transforming it into more than just a unique design feature. It offers a memorable way to end a session, reinforcing the idea that progress and happiness can go hand in hand.
This design approach recognizes that children from toddlers to teenagers need environments that support learning, growth, and confidence, not just clinical care. As a result, the center balances treatment with the simple joys of being a kid, making therapy feel less intimidating and more empowering.

Wayfinding as Therapy
The interior design incorporates playful wayfinding solutions that serve dual purposes: navigation and therapeutic assessment. On the first level, each of the three elevators is marked with large, brightly coloured circles in different hues positioned directly in front of the doors. These circles function as therapeutic tools that enable therapists to assess children’s cognitive abilities by asking them to identify colours or distinguish between different shapes. This way, ‘assessment’ can begin as soon as clients walk through the doors of the centre.
On the upper levels, a flowing wave flooring design guides clients naturally toward reception areas and through treatment spaces, reinforcing orientation while maintaining a calming aesthetic. Complementing these elements, animal icons are used throughout the facility to represent different departments. More than playful imagery, the icons support wayfinding while also catering to a wide range of age groups, balancing child-friendly appeal with designs that remain engaging for older clients.

Therapeutic Spaces and Sensory Considerations
Treatment spaces at Grandview Kids are intentionally varied, with some rooms featuring bright, colourful accent flooring, walls, and millwork to energize and motivate children, while others use muted, mellow colours to create calmer, focused environments. Public areas are designed with playful elements such as circular seating and archway features that invite exploration. These spaces act as transitional areas where children can decompress and adjust to the therapeutic setting. By designing spaces that are either stimulating or tranquil, the facility supports children’s diverse needs, helping them feel comfortable, engaged, and ready to participate in their therapy sessions.
Medical services: Designing for Comfort During Difficult Procedures The third-floor Medical Services department showcases the facility’s commitment to easing the experience during challenging treatments. This area supports clients who require ongoing medical interventions, such as Botox injections for muscle spasticity which is often a painful but necessary treatment. To reduce anxiety, the suite was designed with thoughtful features that also minimize sound transmission. Distraction elements are incorporated throughout, while the layout separates waiting areas acoustically and allows for smooth, private flows for arrival and departure. This ensures children waiting for appointments are not exposed to distressing sounds or the reactions of others, creating a calmer environment for everyone.

Therapy Pool: The Slope Dilemma
The therapy pool at Grandview Kids blends function with fun offering a warm-water environment that supports children with a variety of physical needs. Located on the main level, it’s framed by full-height windows overlooking a landscaped sunken garden. Placing the pool at the entry level posed a significant challenge: the steep site grade meant this area would be below ground, cut off from daylight. The design team’s solution was to use the slope to the design’s advantage – excavating to create a sunken garden, which allowed for the inclusion of expansive, floor-to-ceiling windows and a direct link to nature. What began as a site constraint became a defining feature, transforming a potential limitation into an uplifting and accessible environment for children and families. Its connection to the garden and the rest of the centre reflects Grandview’s focus on accessibility, inclusivity, and overall well-being.
Inclusive Design for Diverse Abilities
The interior architecture demonstrates exceptional attention to accessibility across a wide spectrum of abilities. Large, circular windows that are placed low to the ground create cozy nooks where children can sit within the circle, offering comfort, playfulness and a unique vantage point to observe their surroundings. Adjacent arches further enhance inclusivity by allowing children with different mobility levels to engage with the space in ways that feel natural to them. Together, the circular windows and arches bring in abundant natural light, serve as visual landmarks to support wayfinding, and make the environment feel welcoming and less clinical.

Impact and Innovation Redefine a Children’s Treatment Centre
Grandview Kids demonstrates that healthcare design can transcend traditional boundaries to create environments that are simultaneously therapeutic, fun, and functionally intelligent. The facility proves that children’s treatment centers do not need to sacrifice warmth and ‘whimsy’ for clinical effectiveness – instead, these elements can work together to create more effective treatment environments.
The project establishes new standards for pediatric healthcare design, showing how thoughtful interior architecture and interior design can support both medical treatment and the fundamental human needs for dignity, delight, and hope during challenging times.
