Parkin continues to explore the integration of emerging technologies into the design workflow, with a focus on identifying efficiencies across the design and construction process that support design clarity and coordination.
Building on prior use of virtual reality for collaborative mock-ups and design review, the firm is testing mixed reality tools to visualize design environments within real-world conditions. Using Trimble XR visualization software and a LIDAR-equipped tablet, Parkin conducted a mixed reality simulation in its studio space, overlaying a BIM model of a typical inpatient bedroom and ensuite washroom—based on a recently completed project—onto the physical environment.
The layout of the room was marked on the studio floor, and QR codes were placed on columns to reflect construction-stage elements. The BIM model was uploaded into the mixed reality platform, allowing the Contract Administration team to assess spatial layout, sleeve locations, and other infrastructure in a 3D overlay within the studio setting.
Mixed reality offers potential applications across several project stages. It may provide an alternative to traditional mock-ups during design development, support in-progress site walkthroughs by illustrating future conditions, and assist in field validation by referencing consolidated model data during construction.
The technology also enables cloud-based communication of field conditions between site and office teams, contributing to more efficient coordination between design and construction personnel.
Parkin’s Contract Administration and BIM teams are continuing to evaluate the role of mixed reality within the broader delivery process and are planning a pilot integration within the Contract Administration workflow.
