Enhancing Accessibility at York Regional Police #1 District

At the York Regional Police #1 District, located in Newmarket, Ontario, our commitment to inclusivity drives us to ensure that all our facilities are accessible to everyone. Each feature incorporated throughout our site not only meets but exceeds the requirements of the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). Here’s a closer look at how we’re creating barrier-free spaces:

Exterior Pathways

We’ve established firm and stable exterior paths of travel from the perimeter of the site to the main entrance. These paths are at least 1600 mm wide—exceeding the 1500 mm standard set by OBC and AODA. With a maximum slope of 5% and a cross slope of no more than 2%, with a clear headroom of 2100 mm, ensuring safety and comfort for all users.

Accessible Parking

Accessible parking options are a key component of our commitment to accessibility. Strategically positioned closest to the main entrance, these streamline access for everyone. We offer two types of accessible parking spaces to suit diverse needs.

Entryways and Exits

The main public entrance is fitted with a power door operator, offering seamless entry for all visitors, regardless of physical ability. All required ground level exits are fully accessible with clear signage marked with the International Symbol of Access. Each accessible exit door features a power door operator, while all interior barrier-free pathways maintain a minimum width of 1100 mm, with corridor widths of at least 1830 mm, facilitating easy movement throughout the facility.

Doorways and Passages

Every doorway along a barrier-free path of travel boasts a clear width of no less than 860 mm, ensuring smooth and unobstructed passage for all users.

Universal Washrooms

Our universal washrooms are designed with accessibility in mind, complete with power door operators and lavatories providing generous knee clearances that comply with barrier-free requirements. A clear space for future installation of an adult change table has been included for in the design

Accessible Showers

The facility’s showers are barrier-free, measuring 1500 mm wide by 900 mm deep, with additional clear floor space for ease of use.

Service Counters

The service counters are constructed to accommodate seated mobility aids, offering sufficient knee clearance for a forward approach and a surface at an accessible height.

Building Controls and Elevators

All controls for building services and safety devices are readily accessible from barrier-free pathways and placed within easy reach for individuals using wheelchairs. Additionally, our elevators conform to CAN/CSA‐B355, “Lifts for Persons with Physical Disabilities,” ensuring accessibility across all facility levels.

At York Regional Police #1 District, inclusivity is more than a requirement: it’s a commitment woven into the fabric of the building. By exceeding the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) standards, we’ve created an environment where everyone can feel welcome and independent. From accessible pathways to universally designed washrooms and elevators, every feature reflects our dedication to removing barriers and fostering equity. In crafting a space that prioritizes accessibility, we’re not just meeting regulations—we’re building a community rooted in respect, dignity, and inclusivity for all.
