Designing for Safe Care at Cowichan District Hospital

When the new Cowichan District Hospital opens in 2027, it will reflect years of collaboration and evidence-based planning by the CDH Replacement Project Nuts’a’maat Alliance (Island Health, EllisDon Corporation, BC Infrastructure Benefits, Infrastructure BC, Parkin and ZGF Architects). Parkin Associate and healthcare planner, Melinda Lobo, has been working closely with Island Health staff to help ensure the hospital provides the safest possible care to the growing Cowichan Valley community.

In Island Health’s news feature, Safer Care Through Evidence-Based Design, Melinda shares insight into the infection control strategies being built into the new facility:

“These elements are more than technical solutions—they’re the result of a design process grounded in safety, research, and frontline feedback,” says Melinda.

The article highlights five key focus areas:

  • Partnering for Safer Spaces
  • Designing with Staff in Mind
  • Innovating for Infection Control
  • Standardization for Simplicity and Safety
