Cup of Collaboration | Canstruction 2016

The Toronto design, architecture, and engineering community gives back with 22 canstructures and over 63,000 pounds of food for the Toronto Daily Bread Food Bank!

We teamed up with Entuitive and PCL Construction to design and construct an award-winning exhibit for Toronto’s 17th Annual Canstruction competition. A unique food drive, Canstruction challenges the design community to help raise awareness around hunger in the communities they helped design and build.

Awarded Best Use of Labels, the Cup of Collaboration is based on our team’s philosophy of how important conversations leading to awareness can be shared over a cup of coffee and the “importance of working together in fighting hunger and poverty.

“Our team was structured to mimic a true Design-Build partnership; Parkin Architects acted as the creative consultant for the big picture design, Entuitive provided a focus on structural engineering and advanced modelling, and PCL assisted with constructability recommendations and material procurement. The end result was a creative design that was composed of a 3-D component for the cup, handle, and saucer, as well as a 2-D visual component with the top foam pattern and the lipstick imprint on the top lip of the cup.” – Rob Volcko, Entuitive

With over 60,000 pounds of food raise and media attention around hunger and poverty, the real winner in this competition was the Toronto Daily Food Bank and the families they serve. We hope the conversation can be kept going year-round.

Thank you to our team members for a memorable event. Check out a time-lapsed video of the Cup of Collaboration construction below:
