The replacement of BC’s Cowichan District Hospital is under way, featuring the development of a modern, state-of-the-art hospital on a green-field site. The new, 56,000 m2, seven-story facility features 204 inpatient beds and a comprehensive range of acute care community hospital services, comprising a Diagnostic and Treatment (“D&T”) Block and Inpatient Tower, joined by a two-story, heavy-timber community hall. The D&T Block houses emergency, medical Imaging, ICU, perioperative services, and clinical and facility support departments. The Inpatient Tower contains inpatient beds, outpatient spaces, maternity, and pediatrics, in addition to four inpatient units. One floor is dedicated to mental health services.
Prioritizing Patient-Centered Care
At the heart of the hospital is a commitment to a patient-centered approach. The design’s intent is to create an integrated healthcare system focused on efficient staff delivery and positive patient experiences. Collaborative engagement with Indigenous Nations provided valuable insight in designing a facility that provides cultural safety and significance to the local community. The result is a modern healthcare facility designed to prioritize the well-being of patients and staff, delivering state-of-the-art medical services enhanced by a warm and welcoming environment that is mindful of local culture and traditions.
