During this unprecedented crisis, it has been reported that patients have been refraining from visiting hospital emergency rooms (ERs). The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) has responded to this noted fact by providing a temporary pediatric ER.
Parkin designed an emergency ambulatory respiratory clinic―referred to as an FRI (Frequent Respiratory Infections clinic―in a recently built administration building adjacent to the hospital. The temporary clinic acts as a first stop for respiratory outpatient children whose parents or guardians might otherwise have held back from visiting the hospital’s ER because of COVID-19.
Approximately 60% of the building was redesigned to accommodate clinical functions; the remainder continues to be administrative. The two functions are separate, standalone functions―not even the washrooms are shared.
