Architectural Blog Series: Hamilton Health Sciences, Oncology

Welcome back to our Architectural Blog Series, where we’re highlighting some of the great work happening at Parkin.

About Hamilton Health Sciences, Paediatric Oncology

Our biggest challenge was finding a way to increase patient capacity within the confines of the existing space. The Paediatric Oncology Unit was originally organized as a series of small treatment rooms with patient and staff spaces overlapping. Our solution was to connect those rooms and create a large open area called the Infusion Space.

The new Infusion Space organizes the room into different play zones. For older children and adolescents, there is a television and video game kiosk. In the toddler’s area, we planned low surfaces and furniture. A child-friendly environment was promoted throughout with the use of marble light fixtures, display boards for children’s artwork, and the use of bright colours.

We created space for two private treatment cubicles, which will be used for children who require more intensive treatment. They feature televisions and illuminated-sky-panel ceilings with separate controls for lighting. We were also able to keep an existing series of examination rooms opposite the Infusion Space, which were maintained with cosmetic renovations.
