Awards and Appointments
Robert Boraks Honorary Appointment at Carleton University
On the recommendation of the Interim Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design at Carleton University, Robert Boraks, a Parkin Director, received an honorary appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism.
Peter Pitseolak High School – Project of Distinction
Cape Dorset’s high school received the Project of Distinction designation in School Planning & Management’s 2018 Education Design Showcase.
Robert Boraks RAIC Fellowship
Robert Boraks, a Parkin Director, was appointed Fellowship of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. Robert is Parkin’s lead designer for justice, education and northern design.
ErinoakKids Wins Brampton Urban Design Award
The ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development has won the 2019 Brampton Urban Design Award of Excellence for Healthy and Sustainable Development.

Virtual Reality Demo at the City of Waterloo Mayor’s Breakfast
We provided at a demonstration of how virtual reality (VR) is used in architecture at the Mayor’s Breakfast at RIM Park (designed by Parkin in 2001).
McMaster Children’s Hospital Published in Healthcare Snapshots
Our McMaster Children’s Hospital project has been published in Healthcare Snapshots. In 2011, the hospital renovated and expanded the emergency department, while maintaining a safe environment for the existing facility to remain fully operational.
Robert Boraks – American Institute of Architects Conference
Robert Boraks, a Parkin Director, participated in a panel discussion on Behavioral Health within Correctional Facilities at the 2019 American Institute of Architects annual conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Rethinking Patient Care Facility Design
Lynne Wilson Orr, a Patkin Principal, shared her experience with Healthcare Innovation Magazine on “Rethinking Patient Care Facility Design”.
Penticton Regional Hospital – AWARD Magazine
The David E. Kampe Tower at Penticton Regional Hospital was featured in the AWARD magazine. This state-of-the-art building is a six-storey facility consisting of 84 single-patient rooms with private washrooms, five operating theatres, satellite medical imaging, and a rooftop helipad. It opened its doors on April 29, 2019.
Rankin Inlet Facility showcased by Canadian Trade Commissioner
The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service showcased Parkin’s Rankin Inlet Healing Facility project in its justice infrastructure factsheet. The factsheet has been shared with Global Affairs Canada’s network of trade commissioners in over 160 cities around the world and across Canada for the promotion of Canada’s infrastructure expertise to potential buyers and partners.
Trends in Correctional Design
Robert Boraks, a Parkin Director, shared insight on trends in correctional design in Correctional News.
Providence Care Hospital published in Healthcare Design Magazine
Providence Care Hospital was published in Healthcare Design Magazine’s October 2019 Behavioral Health Portfolio. The hospital is a leading provider of specialized mental health, rehabilitation, geriatrics, complex continuing care, and palliative care.
Project Updates
CHEO’s Ophthalmology Clinic Addresses New Trends
The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) new ophthalmology facility comprises identical clinical rooms, improved barrier-free access, and patient safety amenities, as well as parental visibility and views. The space also provides collaborative and confidential workspace for staff and maximizes patient distraction with a fun waiting space and fixation distraction devices in each exam room, all designed in close collaboration with CHEO staff.
Endovascular Aneurysm Repair at William Osler Health System
We worked with William Osler Health System to develop a world-class vascular interventional radiology hybrid suite at Brampton Civic Hospital. This highly specialized space allows for traditional (open) surgical techniques to be used in combination with minimally invasive procedures to treat peripheral vascular and aortic disease.
Hanover & District Hospital Level 1 & 2 OR Services Renovations
The planned renovation of Hanover & District Hospital (HDH) will see the expansion of the existing surgical department, and will provide more preparation and recovery bays, a larger nurse station, and a new procedure room. Mechanical and electrical system upgrades have been completed to meet current best practice guidelines.
David E. Kampe Tower
On April 29, 2019, BC’s Penticton Regional Hospital welcomed patients to its new, state-of-the-art David E. Kampe Tower.
Peterborough Regional Health Centre Opens New Learning Centre
After five years of planning, design and construction, the Peterborough Regional Health Centre has opened its new learning centre. The new learning centre has space to accommodate up to 100 healthcare staff and features state-of-the-art training tools and equipment.
Joseph Brant Hospital Achieves LEED® Silver Certification
The Michael Lee-Chin and Family Patient Tower at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington has achieved LEED Silver certification under LEED Canada for New Construction and Major Renovations.
Anova Fertility and Reproductive Health
Parkin completed Canada’s newest, full service fertility and IVF centre—home to the first next-generation embryology laboratory in Canada.
Anova is a provincially funded clinic for fertility treatment and minimally invasive gynaecological procedures. This state-of-the-art fertility includes a next-generation IVF facility with three labs, three procedure rooms, a preparation and recovery area with five individual areas, each of which has a recliner for the woman and bench seating for her partner, complete with a computer docking station.
Cape Dorset Health Centre
Throughout the remaining construction season, the building’s foundations, superstructure and building envelope will be erected. The goal is to enclose the building so that work can continue into the winter months.
Northern Kugaaruk School Completed
The original schedule was achieved with the school being ready for occupancy at the end of August 2019.
Breaking Ground in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador
Parkin and B+H Architects are members of the winning team selected to design, build, finance, and maintain the new hospital in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador. The new seven-storey, 600,000 square-foot hospital will be connected to the 145-bed long-term care home. Premier The Honourable Dwight Ball, marked the beginning of construction with a ground-breaking ceremony.
HSC Winnipeg HSC Women’s Hospital
The new Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre Women’s Hospital opened to patients on December 1, 2019, providing women, children and families with a state-of-the-art healthcare facility.
Inauguration of Centretown Community Health Centre (CCHC)
On October 24, 2019, CCHC inaugurated its renovated space. A donor recognition ceremony was organized to cut the ribbon and tour the building.
Providence Care Hospital Achieves LEED® Silver Certification
This ultra-modern Kingston healthcare facility was awarded LEED® Silver certification. The Hospital incorporates environmentally friendly features to reduce its impact on the planet.
Caledon East Community Centre – Phase III
Phase III is an expansion of the existing facility to include a new fitness facility, multi-purpose track, multi-purpose gymnasium, integrated indoor walking track, aerobics studio, multi-purpose rooms, and a dedicated sports hall of fame.
