It has been an incredible and rewarding year for us here at Parkin: from the opening of a state-of-the-art police training facility in Ontario to several innovative, cutting-edge healthcare projects and the many project milestones met in the foremost healthcare, educational, recreation, justice, and research institutions across Canada.
As we reflect on the past year, we would like to take this time to thank our staff, partners, and team members for their dedication and hard work. Together, we will continue to accomplish meaningful work and provide truly worthwhile services to our clients in the year ahead.

Awards
Tuugaalik High School selected for Outstanding Design by 2017 American School & University Educational Interiors Showcase
Tuugaalik High School, Naujaat, Nunavut was selected as an Outstanding Design in the 2017 American School & University Educational Interiors Showcase, the premier competition honouring education interiors excellence.
Honourable Mention Award for Tuugaalik High School
The school received a Honourable Mention and National Recognition award for excellence in educational facility design in the 2017 spring edition of LEARNING BY DESIGN, praised for its overall plan, architectural design and attributes worthy of imitation.
Canstruction Creation Wins Again!
Having won the Best Use of Labels award in the 2016 Canstruction Toronto competition, the Entuitive/PCL/Parkin submission was named as the recipient of one of eight Canstruction International awards.
Finalists in the SBID Awards 2017
The firm was shortlisted for the prestigious SBID International Design Awards in the Healthcare Design category for Providence Care Hospital (designed in Joint Venture with Adamson Associates Architects).
Fall 2017 issue of American School & University (Architectural Portfolio) – Tuugaalik High School, Naujaat, Nunavut
Tuugaalik High School, Naujaat, Nunavut was awarded a Special Citation in the 2017 American School & University Architectural Portfolio. The jury commented on the “Great effort in using color, pattern, and simple materials to create a welcoming, contextural and inspired environment.”

Providence Care Hospital – Featured in Canadian Healthcare Facilities 2017
In addition to making the cover, the magazine includes a two-page feature exploring how Providence Care Hospital’s design helps to improve patient care and includes commentary from lead architect Cameron Shantz, Director at Parkin Architects.
Post-Occupancy Evaluation of a Mental Healthcare Facility Based on Staff Perceptions of Design Innovations – HERD Magazine
We participated in a post-occupancy evaluation (POE) study to examine the effectiveness of three specific design innovations in a mental health facility.
Joseph Brant Hospital – Featured in The Burlington Post
In celebration of Joseph Brant Hospital’s new patient tower opening, the Post includes a special insert with information about the new facility, its design, and the hospital’s community.
Project Updates
Women and Newborn Hospital – Progress
Construction on the Women and Newborn Hospital in Winnipeg is nearing completion. Interior clinical areas are flooded with light, which will have a positive impact on patients and staff.
Parkin Awarded Institutional Master Plan (IMP) Project by Correctional Service Canada (CSC)
In association with CGL, we were awarded the IMP Project by CSC, including preparation of IMPs for five of Canada’s federal correctional institutions. The project will document operational and physical requirements needed to provide effective and humane maximum security incarceration at those institutions.
Construction begins for the Cape Dorset School
With delivery of blasting and excavation equipment on the last barge of the fall, construction of the new high school in Nunavut has begun. The school will include culturally relevant spaces, such as a “skin room” for preparing animal skins.
Parkin working on the New Igloolik High School
Materials for the new school on which we are working with Accutech Engineering arrived in 2016 by sealift. Completion is targeted for June 2018.
Parkin to Design New Mental Health Centre
The Provincial Health Services Authority of British Columbia has selected EllisDon Corporation and Parkin Architects Western Ltd. as the preferred proponent to design and build the new 105-bed Centre for Mental Health and Addiction on the Riverview lands.
Tuugaalik High School – Postcard
This outstanding facility won an Honourable Mention in the Learning by Design Magazine. The project added further northern expertise to our portfolio.
Providence Care Hospital – Postcard
The first hospital in North America to combine long-term mental health care, physical rehabilitation, and complex-care programs in one building.
RCMP in Arviat nearing completion
This 5,000 SF RCMP building in Arviat is designed to exceed the requirements of the Good Building Practices Guidelines for Nunavut. Methods and construction materials were selected to ensure ease of transportation, and installation.
SickKids – Intermediate Care Redesign for Ward 7C
Observation nooks were added in the corridors to convert a traditional single-patient ward, allowing 2-1 intermediate care nursing. The new physical layout allows for the optimization of nursing resources.
