2022 Parkin Architects Year in Review

We take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to our staff, partners, and all team members for their hard work and dedication over the past year. As we moved to a post-pandemic world, it has been rewarding to be able to contribute our services to the community, and to have worked with amazing teams. We look forward to the opportunity to achieve even more together in 2023.

Awards and Appointments

Parkin receives a Global Future Design Award

One of Parkin’s northern schools, “Peter Pitseolak High School”, was the winner.

Gold Winner: Red Fish Centre for Mental Health and Addiction

Urban Design & Architecture Design Awards 2022 announced a Gold Award for this unique facility, located on səmiq̓ʷəʔelə in Coquitlam, BC (formerly the Riverview lands).  The core guiding design and construction principles reflect the values of the community and the Kwikwetlem First Nation (“KFN”). The Centre’s name is a reference to the sockeye salmon that once thrived in the Coquitlam River.

Parkin Receives Two Touchstone Awards

The Gold level award was achieved for the Corner Brook Acute Care Hospital Wayfinding Research Project, submitted in collaboration with Dr. Saleh Kalantari, Cornell University.  The Silver level award was for Providence Care Hospital, submitted in collaboration with Methologica Inc.

Gold Winner:  Kinngait Health Centre

Global Future Design Awards 2022 announced the Gold Award to Parkin’s Kinngait ᑭᙵᐃᑦ (formerly known as Cape Dorset) Health Centre, situated on Dorset Island at the southern tip of Baffin Island in Nunavut.

Shortlist Issued for 1Door4Care: CHEO Integrated Treatment Centre

Parkin was shortlisted based on Infrastructure Ontario and CHEO’s criteria identified in a Request for Qualifications process that began in March.

Winner: World Design Awards 2022

Parkin received this award for Red Fish Centre for Mental Health and Addiction project, arguably the first large, standalone, behavioural health centre dedicated to treating concurrent disorders of mental health and addictions.

Publications, Conferences and Speaking Engagements

Accelerating Net Zero Targets in Healthcare Facilities – A Forum of Experts

In February, Parkin sponsored and participated in a forum on decarbonizing healthcare infrastructure hosted by the Canadian Centre for Healthcare Facilities The forum broadened understand of  the ingredients of successful decarbonizing programs and their application in healthcare facilities projects. Innovative technologies and design choices being applied, as well as other innovative initiatives were aired.

Parkin’s Joseph Brant Hospital was featured on Archello. A major addition and renovations were completed in 2018.

A project for one of our projects from our technology and research portfolio was published in Archello. Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) engaged Parkin to design a new research laboratory building to house the Centre for Cold Regions and Water Sciences.

Red Fish Healing Centre for Mental Health and Addiction – Published in AWARD Magazine

In March, Award Magazine featured Red Fish Healing Centre for Mental Health and Addiction. As quoted in the feature, “The Red Fish Healing Centre for Mental Health & Addiction in Coquitlam, B.C. is so much more than a treatment facility: from the site on which it stands, its design, and the artwork inside, to its technology and systems, and innovative care model, the sensitive approach taken with each and every aspect of this project has resulted in an outstanding first-of its-kind healing centre that celebrates a highly unique model of care—one based on decades of research, experience, and expertise in treating the most complex forms of mental health and substance use relating specifically to this complex population.”

European Health Design Conference 2022: Transforming Mental Health Design

In June, Parkin participated in the European Health Design Conference, hosted in London, UK.  Our team presented a session on Transforming Mental Health Design in Session #21.  The exemplary project was the Red Fish Healing Centre for Mental Health and Addiction in Coquitlam, BC.

Art of Leadership Conference for Women – Inspiration

Also in June, Parkin Associate and Interior Designer, Erinn Haley-Stevenson, attended the Art of Leadership Conference for Women, in Toronto. The conference brings the most prominent leaders, speakers, and bestselling authors to each conference to keep business-minded professionals current with an exciting blend of innovative thinking and real-world experience.

University of Ottawa Feasibility Study

Following completion of the Advanced Medical Research Centre feasibility study for uOttawa, Parkin finalized a connected follow-up study of the university’s Roger Guindon Hall. The purpose of the studies was to identify opportunities and challenges associated with the expansion of medical laboratory capacity, and to explore how the Ottawa Health Sciences Centre and regional partners could participate in the process.

Parkin Participates in Round Table Discussion at Healthcare Design Conference + Expo

In October, Parkin participated in an interactive roundtable discussion for the Healthcare Design Conference + Expo at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas.  Robin Snell’s roundtable discussion session with Cliff Harvey, Chief Planning Officer, Niagara Health was titled “A New Standard for Healthcare Facility Design Studies and Post-occupancy Evaluation”.

Lakeridge Gardens Long-Term Care Home featured in AWARD Magazine

A great P3 consortium of G Architects, PCL Construction, Lakeridge Health, and Infrastructure Ontario was responsible for building Lakeridge Gardens, adjacent to  Lakeridge Health Ajax Pickering Hospital.

Red Fish Healing Centre for Mental Health and Addiction featured in Healthcare Design

In August, Red Fish Healing Centre for Mental Health and Addiction was featured in Healthcare Design, Showcase.

Parkin Curates Decarbonization Forum #3 with CCHF

In September, we shared our expertise as platinum partners with Canadian Care for Healthcare Facilities (CCHF) at their third forum, titled “Decarbonizing Forum #3: Vision, Progress and Outcomes”.

Maclean’s ranks uOttawa among Canada’s Leading Medical Doctoral Universities

Parkin led several successful visioning and stakeholder engagement sessions with both uOttawa and Ottawa Health Sciences Centre partners as part of the uOttawa’s team for the Advanced Medical Research Centre feasibility study.

Project Updates

Waterloo Recreation Complex: Community Pavilion Update

While occupancy was achieved in the previous fall (2021), total completion was reached in the spring when the exterior works were completed.

Revamped Aquatics Research Lab

The Waterloo Aquatic Threats in Environmental Research (WATER) facility aims to “simulate and research aquatic stressors and threats” to better prepare to address and prevent current and future problems. The Parkin-designed new lab facility at the University of Waterloo was completed.

York Regional Police No.1 District Headquarters

In January, York Regional Police moved into their new No. 1 District Headquarters in the Town of Newmarket. The facility achieved Passive House Principles and was submitted for LEED Silver status.

Satellite Dialysis for Georgian Bay General Hospital

In February, Georgian Bay General Hospital’s satellite dialysis unit officially opened.

Grandview Children’s Centre Preferred Proponent

The Children First Consortium was the preferred proponent selected for the Grandview Children’s Centre Redevelopment project in Ajax.

Preferred Proponent for West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Redevelopment Project

EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare (EDIH) was selected as the preferred proponent to design, build, and finance the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital redevelopment project designed by Parkin.

Royal Inland Hospital, BC: New Tower Completed

Designed with direct input from local health-care workers, the nine-storey Phil & Jennie Gaglardi Tower at Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) reached completion.

Kinngait Health Centre

At the one-year warranty inspection of the Kinngait Health Centre in Nunavut, we were gratified by many positive responses expressed by staff, patients, and community members.

Parkin Contributing to the new CSA Pilot

Parkin hosted and contribute drawings and graphics to the new Pilot CSA Z317.13-22 Health Care Construction Project training modules.

New Taloyoak High School – Taloyoak, Nunavut

Parkin was \ appointed to design Taloyoak High School in Nunavut, another addition to our northern portfolio

École Des Trois-Soleils: Status Update

Construction of the expansion of Canada’s northernmost Francophone school, École des Trois-Soleils in Iqaluit, NU, was well underway.

Clarington Police Complex – Phase 2: Under Construction

Construction was underway for the Clarington Police Complex – Phase 2 project, with occupancy scheduled for April 2024.

SickKids Adolescent Mental Health Inpatient Unit

Parkin helped redesign the Slaight Family Integrated Mental Health Unit at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, a unit that cares for children and youth who experience a broad range of mental health conditions and eating disorders.

Cedar Canoe Project

As advocates of designing facilities that improve the lives of children and parents, as well as those who care for them, our research introduced us to (KIP) Canada, an organization that supports the under-served needs of children affected by parental incarceration.  We are committed supporters of this foundation. Parkin was invited to visit indigenous artisans associated with KIP as they built a traditional cedar canoe. It was truly special to hear testimonies from participants describing the project and what it means to them.

City of Waterloo Community Pavilion Opens

In September, the new Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex Community Pavilion opened.

CHEO Opening IR/CATH & SIM Labs

In October, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario new Interventional Radiology (IR), Cardiac Catheterization (Cath) and Simulation (Sim) Labs were opened.

Durham Regional Police Services – Phase 2: Construction Update

Construction of concrete foundations was well underway.

New Emergency Department Groundbreaking Ceremony at Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital

October saw the ground-breaking ceremony for the hospital’s new Emergency Department.
