Health Sciences Centre (HSC), Women’s Hospital: Designing for the NICU

Women’s Hospital is located on a brown-field site adjacent to Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre. The centre consolidates women’s health services from multiple sites at HSC Winnipeg into a single facility that includes ambulatory care clinics, birthing facilities, a women’s surgery suite, inpatient units, and a large NICU.

A Principal and shareholder at Parkin, (and University of Manitoba graduate), Lynne Wilson Orr is an architect and interior designer with a particular interest and expertise in the design and delivery of health facilities. Lynne was a chapter author of the Health Canada Family-Centred Maternity and Newborn Care Guidelines and is a member of the USA Consensus Committee for the Recommended Standards for Newborn ICU Design. She was also the team leader for the Maternal Newborn Services and Accessibility and Wayfinding Focus Groups of the Generic Output Specifications developed for Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. She is a member of the CSA Strategic Steering Committee on Healthcare and well-being.

Parkin has developed a series of videos that focus on Lynne’s experience designing and planning the hospital. The third video in the series “Designing for the NICU” is posted for viewing. To view this insightful video, please visit us on YouTube.
