Renovation
The hospital decided to extend its ninth floor Genetics and
Genomic Biology Departments in the Elan Wing to create a new
Centre for Applied Genomics. The project involved renovations
to approximately 1,000 sq. ft. of space. Since the complex
houses highly sensitive research equipment and robotics,
Parkin's design focused on providing an open-plan research
environment. This approach included the routing of services
under the counter tops and the elimination of shelving over
aisle benches. Further flexibility is provided by having
under-the-counter cabinets on rollers to allow for easy movement.
Careful attention was also paid to lighting, floor patterns
and colour palettes to enhance the working environment for users.

Renovation
The seventh-floor Elm Wing Laboratory renovation involved
the demolition of 1,345 sq. ft. of antiquated laboratory
space that was being used by four principal investigators
and their staff. After carefully analyzing the current
facilities and staff activities, Parkin developed wet
laboratory design guidelines that defined the size and
locations of benching, shelving, lighting, services, storage,
fume hoods and biological containment cabinets and safety
facilities. These new standards were applied to wet, tissue
culture and microscopy laboratories, and have now become
the basis for all laboratory redevelopment at the hospital.
