Royal Ottawa Hospital

New Facility, AFP (Alternative Financing and Procurement)
The Royal Ottawa Hospital needed to replace its obsolete campus with a new psychiatric facility to provide services for outpatients and 200 inpatients in forensic, mood disorder, anxiety disorder, geriatrics, child and youth, substance abuse, intensive assessment and schizophrenia programs. The existing facility, which was made up of several older buildings, had to be kept operational throughout the project, so demolition could not be started until the new building was occupied. As one of Ontario 's first AFP healthcare projects in Ontario, construction had to be completed within a two-year timeline. To build the hospital's profile in the community and create a positive and welcoming aspect for passers-by, Parkin located the new building closer to the street in an area that is in front of and adjacent to the existing buildings. The new building includes a three-storey in-patient and out-patient facility, and a seven-storey tower for the Hospital's Institute for Mental Health Research, which includes a 200-seat auditorium and education centre.
