Redevelopment
St. Mary's General Hospital was selected to be developed into a cardiac care centre that would service the needs of the entire Kitchener Waterloo region. The final design gathers similar programs and groups them together. Outpatient clinical services will now be accessible on street level. All of the operating rooms are designed around a sterile core on the second floor with a clear flow in, from day surgery and out, to the post anesthesia care unit. The intensive care unit (ICU), cardiac care unit and cardiovascular ICU are connected horizontally to the surgical suites providing uninhibited access in case of emergency. Parkin strategically planned the phasing of the facility to enable the hospital to begin its cardiac program promptly, while the rest of the facility continues to be redeveloped. Programs which have already been built and occupied include the Emergency department, Cardiac Catheterization Suite, two interim CVOR's and a CVICU.
