2018 Parkin Architects Year In Review

It has been an exciting and rewarding year for Parkin Architects Limited. We continued our work on a number of cutting-edge projects for the foremost healthcare, educational, recreation, justice, and research institutions across Canada.

Thank you to our staff, partners and team members for their hard work, passion and dedication over this past year. We look forward to what 2019 will bring knowing that, together, we will continue to innovate and exceed client expectations.

Awards 

Vancouver’s Joseph and Rosalie Segal Family Health Centre Wins European High Commendation
At the June 2018 European Healthcare Design Congress in London, UK, the Joseph and Rosalie Segal Family Health Centre, commissioned by Fraser Health and designed by Parkin Architects Western Ltd., received a “highly commended” award in the Healthcare Design over 20,000 sqm category.

Parkin wins an ARIDO Award
Marnie’s Studio at SickKids won an Award of Merit in the healthcare facilities category.

Publications, Conferences and Speaking Engagements

Joseph Brant Hospital published in Healthcare Design, Interior Design Portfolio
The Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH) project comprises  a seven-story addition, 172-bed patient care tower and renovations to the existing hospital. This innovative facility is nestled between Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment with 75% of patient rooms having lake views.

Providence Care Hospital in Hospital News—Building a Senior Friendly Hospital
Dr. Lindy Kilik, neuropsychologist with the seniors’ mental health program at PCH shares insight into this senior-friendly design.

InsiteVR’s Immersive Project Showcase
On April 11, 2018, Parkin featured its VR work on InsiteVR’s Immersive Project Showcase. Participants from across North America joined in and were able to view the Electrophysiology Room designed for St. Mary’s General Hospital (SMGH), while wearing VR headsets in a live presentation.

Post Occupancy Evaluation Symposium & Workshop
On May 3rd, 2018, Robin Snell, Parkin Principal, introduced proposed HCF Design Research and Evaluation Standard objectives, structure, and content during a structured break-out session at a symposium and workshop hosted by the Canadian Centre for Health Facilities (CCHF) in support of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

Joseph & Rosalie Segal & Family Health Centre, Vancouver General Hospital | Award Magazine
The new Joseph & Rosalie Segal & Family Health Centre, part of the Vancouver General Hospital, was published in Award Magazine’s April 2018 issue. This new facility consolidates inpatient, outpatient, and outreach mental health and substance use services in one building. The facility is a LEED Gold, nine-storey facility with 100 inpatient beds that were designed with extensive input from mental health clients, families, healthcare providers, and support personnel.

Halton Regional Police Service Headquarters | Award Magazine
Published in Award Magazine’s April 2018 issue, the Halton Regional Police Service’s New Headquarters consolidates services including forensics and training under one roof, allowing for growth to accommodate the needs of expanding regional population.  

CCHF Conference on Innovative Technologies and Design Transforming the Care Environment
John MacSween, Parkin Western Director, presented at CCHF Conference on Innovative Technologies and Design Transforming the Care Environment.

Prison Design—Ideas from a Lead Justice Designer
Robert Boraks, a Parkin Director, shared correctional facility design trends in the third issue of Justice Trends Magazine.

Joseph Brant Hospital | Lab Design News Magazine
Lab Design News Magazine posted a brief project overview and provided photos of the Joseph Brant Hospital’s innovative spaces.

Parkin Healthcare Experts at George Brown College
Lynne Wilson Orr, Principal at Parkin and Claire O’Donnell, Associate at Parkin, taught a new course in Healthcare Interior Design to third year students in the Interior Design Technology Program at George Brown College.

ICPA Conference—Beyond Prisons: The Way Forward
Robert Boraks, a Parkin Director, presented at the 20th annual conference of the International Corrections and Prisons Associations on the evolution of corrections delivery in Ontario, and lessons learned.

Project Updates

ErinoakKids Opening
On January 6, 2018, ErinoakKids opened its doors to the public for a preview walkthrough of its three new facilities in Brampton, Mississauga, and Oakville. These warm and welcoming new buildings were carefully planned to create new opportunities for clients, their families, and therapists to learn and develop in facilities that will support them on their journey.

University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine, Medical Sciences Building, Lab & Support Room Renovations
Parkin Architects Limited was engaged by the University of Toronto to redesign the research labs and support spaces, as well as the morgue and anatomy teaching labs, in a multi-million dollar retrofit in the Medical Sciences Building. The first of several phases is complete and the researchers have returned to bright, energy efficient and flexible modular laboratories.

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH)—Cardiac Care Interventional Suite
This RVH project brings advanced cardiac care to the citizens of Simcoe Muskoka. The hospital opened a new Cardiac Care Interventional Suite (“CCIS”), constructed within existing shelled space. Parkin provided full architectural services for design, planning and construction of a top-grade, two-room cardiac catheterization suite with 18 pre/post care bays, and a full range of support.

Women and Newborn Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba—Receives LEED Certification
The Women and Newborn Hospital received LEED Certified designation.

Penticton Regional Hospital (PRH)—Progress Report

Upgrades to the SickKids Image-Guided Therapy Suite (IGT)
Having designed the original IGT suite at SickKids several years before, Parkin was engaged by HealthCare Solutions to redesign the suite to accommodate an upgrade to the diagnostic equipment.

Parkin and SickKids Break New Ground in Paediatric Patient Care
Eighteen years ago, Parkin and SickKids broke new ground in paediatric patient care, when the hospital needed to invest in an Image Guided Therapy suite to provide diagnostic treatments in an OR setting. This year, Parkin refreshed the suite to accommodate upgrades to the diagnostic equipment.

RCMP Detachment in Arviat, Nunavut—Progress Update
June, 2018: The new RCMP detachment in Arviat, Nunavut was nearing completion. The majority of the construction work was complete, and commissioning work was underway. Building occupancy was achieved in late summer, 2018.

York Regional Police Training Facility—LEED Silver Certified
The York Regional Police Training Facility in East Gwillimbury received LEED Silver Certification. The facility comprises an 80,000 sq.ft. single-level facility containing office space for staff plus nine technology and lecture-based classrooms, four of which can be combined into a single, large presentation venue.

Parkin Consolidates Scarborough and Rouge Hospital’s Diagnostic Imaging Suite
Parkin was working on consolidating Scarborough and Rouge Hospital’s diagnostic imaging concourse at the General site.

Grand Opening of Cape Dorset High School
A grand opening ceremony for Cape Dorset High School was hosted on September 10, 2018. It was well attended by approximately 200 people (not including students).

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, Child & Youth Mental Health Program
Parkin completed the Child & Youth Mental Health Program at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre. The project included the conversion of a former administration department into a new child and youth mental health unit with inpatient and day-program services.

Halton police open their new state-of-the-art headquarters
Halton police cut the ribbon on their new state-of-the-art police headquarters during a ceremony on September 13, 2018. Officers raised the Canadian, Ontario and Halton police flags outside the $65 million facility.

Royal Inland Hospital Patient Care Tower in Kamloops, BC.
Parkin in association with Kasian is the design component of EllisDon Infrastructure, which was named as the preferred proponent for the new Royal Inland Hospital Patient Care Tower in Kamloops, BC.

New RCMP Detachment in Arviat, Nunavut—Completed
The new Arviat, Nunavut RCMP detachment was completed and was occupied in October, 2018. The building program provides staff and support areas, a secure zone including holding cells and two garage bays to meet the RCMP’s functional requirements.

University of Guelph and Athletics Canada—Gryphon Fieldhouse serving as a Centre of Excellence
Parkin was working on minor renovations to update the Gryphon Fieldhouse at the University of Guelph, to support the Speed River Track & Field Club and the University of Guelph, in partnership with Athletics Canada, as a Centre of Excellence (COE).
