Touring Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex Before it’s Built

Parkin is the architect of record for the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex completed in 1993, and has recently been awarded the expansion project, slated for completion in 2021.

At two open houses on January 24, 2019, Parkin immersed Waterloo residents in a virtual reality experience of the proposed expansion project. Strapping on the Oculus Rift headset, participants were able to  understand the facility layout and dimensions.  Their experiences were shared with others to see on a projection screen, as they walked through the space.

“Virtual reality is definitely a new tool on the market and something the City was excited about when Parkin Architects Limited proposed the option,” said Mary Cathryn Lorentz, the City’s project co-ordinator.

The open houses featured a 3D model of the exterior, as well as multiple information boards detailing the new spaces.
