Parkin is delighted to have worked on the Child & Youth Mental Health Program (“CYMH”) at RVH. Planning and designing for mental health hospitals and units within hospitals is one of our key areas of expertise.
Commenting on unique challenges in creating safe spaces for mental health units, Parkin VP and CYMH project architect says:
“Mental health projects represent unique challenges in creating spaces that are safe for both staff and patient—without appearing to be institutional. We seek to create healing spaces that promote a welcoming and familiar environment. In the new Child and Youth Mental Health Project at RVH, child-friendly spaces were created; they include built-in, custom millwork in bedrooms, areas for art display, curvilinear specialty ceilings and coloured resin panels. Support spaces are centralized and accessed from a back corridor, helping to promote a familiar, home-like environment”.
